Originally originating from early Chinese dynasty's, lacquer ware is now made in many parts of Asia. The majority of the pieces I sell come from another small family business based in southern Vietnam, where lacquer making became an official economic sector in 1443, although it was not until around 1930 that the art became more commercial with factories producing pieces on a larger scale.

Making lacquerware is a remarkable process taking 60 days or more to make one piece. The raw product, usually solid wood or bamboo, is formed into the desired shape and sealed. This is followed by many applications (12 or more) of paint or lacquer, with each stage requiring drying and laborious sanding, in between. Often the product is inlaid with Mother of Pearl or egg shell in its final stages, giving remarkably intricate design. From Vietnam our small cottage industry artists, make products to our design or specific customer requirements.
